Like Abraham, he “breathed his last and died in a good old age, an old man and full of years, and was gathered to his people” (Genesis 25:8). Like Abraham, he followed God all his long life, and like Abraham, he “directed his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord.” He was such a blessing to all those God brought into his path around the world, always praying and pointing others to the Lord Jesus Christ by both his words and actions.

A 1949 graduate of Erskine College, he received his Doctorate of Medicine degree from Vanderbilt University in 1954. Dr. Young served as an ARP missionary to Pakistan from 1959 - 1972. He and his wife relocated to Due West, SC in 1972 to care for his mother and opened his urological practice in Abbeville, serving the people of Abbeville County until 1985. Dr. Young returned to the mission field in East Africa from 1985 - 1989. Later that year he was elected Moderator of the ARP Synod. He worked from 1992- 1997 as medical officer at SC Department of corrections. Dr. Young was an elder in the ARP church, a Gideon, Rotarian, member of the American Urological Association, SC Urological Association and Pinecrest A.R.P. Church. He was active in the Alliance of Loyal Laity in the ARP church and on the board of Directors of both World Witness and the Rafiki Foundation.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Eloise Young Aultman and Eula Young Oates.
Dr. Young is survived by his wife of 68 years, Cecil, of Flat Rock, NC; and children Dr. Edwin R. Young, III (Steve) of New York City, Mayhoward Young Johnston (Terry) of Roanoke, VA, Jennifer Young Jurkowski (Rev. Bryan) of Greenville, SC, Mason Pressley Young (Jane), of Marietta, GA, Cecile Young Whitten (Nat) of Brandon, MS, and Dr. Matthew Donald Young (Cindy), of Montreat, NC; and seventeen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren with one on the way.
